Plans for a new multi-purpose sports facility in Thurles will go on display at the main foyer of the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS) Thurles Campus on Thursday, January 19, 2023.

Members of the public are invited to view the plans between 6.30 pm and 8.00pm and meet the design team ahead of the project being submitted for permission under the Planning and Development Acts.

Tipperary County Council in partnership with TUS (formerly LIT), Thurles Tennis Club, Tennis Ireland, Munster Tennis and the Tipperary County Board of the GAA, previously applied to the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for funding to design this major sports facility which will be located at the TUS Campus in Thurles. This application was successful and the design is now completed.

The proposed development will include an international-standard indoor clay-court tennis facility, floodlit all-weather Astroturf GAA-sized pitch and two floodlit sand carpet pitches, two viewing stands, changing rooms, an extension to the Sports Lab, administration facilities, changing facilities and a community walking track.

The community in Thurles will now have a chance to see that plans first hand and discuss the drawings and design with members of the design team on Thursday night.

This development is hailed as a major expansion of the sports facilities in Thurles as it will be available to use by a wide range of clubs and organisations in the region and beyond. It has been designed to accommodate various sports and to facilitate community activities.

This new state of the art facility will build on Thurles’ proud sporting history and guarantee its status as a major centre of sport and recreation well into the future.
