Tipperary boxer will contest National Senior Elite final at the National Stadium

Clonmel boxer Shauna O'Keeffe

Clonmel boxer Shauna O'Keeffe will contest the final of the National Senior Elite Light Welterweight Championship at the National Stadium this Saturday night.

She qualified for the final by beating Senior Elite champion Eve Woods, DCU/Defence Forces Boxing Club, Dublin, by a unanimous decision last weekend.

The Clonmel fighter holds a special place in Irish boxing history, considering she is the only woman to face Katie Taylor in the national championships – and the fact she stepped up to fight the Irish icon and gave the now undisputed lightweight world champion the chance to win a title in the ring secured her place in Irish fight fans' hearts.

Shauna also holds an amateur victory over Amy Broadhurst and was on the wrong end of a final defeat to another Olympic gold medal winner, Kellie Harrington.

All her coaches and clubmates at Clonmel Boxing Club were delighted with her performance last weekend and are looking forward to this weekend, as they wish Shauna the very best of luck in her bout against Winnie Christina McDonagh from Neilstown, Dublin.
