Tipperary rugby player Amee-Leigh Murphy Crowe has been nominated for the HerSport Athlete of the Year award, which recognises the exceptional individual achievements of Ireland’s sportswomen in a single calendar year.
Amee-Leigh started playing rugby when she was 15, when she joined her local club Clanwilliam. Three years later she was invited to play Sevens for Ireland, with her senior debut taking place in 2014.
Murphy Crowe is the top try scorer for Ireland Sevens and was the top try scorer for the 2021-2022 World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, which saw her nominated for World Rugby Women’s Sevens Player of the Year for 2022.
Amee-Leigh earned her 50th Sevens cap for Ireland last year at the Cape Town Sevens.
She has helped Ireland's Sevens reach their current spot in the ranking, which right now is high enough to guarantee a spot at the 2024 Olympics.
The other nominees include boxer Amy Broadhurst, athlete Ciara Mageean, Tipperary jockey Rachael Blackmore, canoeist Jenny Egan, boxer Katie Taylor, golfer Leona Maguire, Kilkenny camogie star Miriam Walsh and rower Katie O’Brien.
The winner will be announced on next Saturday, January 28.
