National Senior Elite boxing success crowns remarkable comeback for Tipperary's Shauna O'Keeffe

Shauna O'Keeffe is declared the champion after beating Winnie Christina McDonagh from Neilstown, Dublin in the final

Clonmel is toasting a new national champion after boxer Shauna O'Keeffe won the Senior Elite 63 kgs championship at the National Stadium in Dublin.

Having beaten the title holder Eve Woods in the semi-final, she defeated Winnie Christina McDonagh from Neilstown, Dublin on Saturday evening on a unanimous decision in front of a large and loud attendance, which included several supporters from Clonmel.

It was a first women's senior elite title for the famed Clonmel Boxing Club and a case of third time lucky for Shauna, who was beaten in two previous finals at this level by Olympic champions Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington in 2016 and 2017.

It was a remarkable victory for a boxer who only returned to the ring for these championships after a long layoff.

Clonmel Boxing Club coach Martin Fennessy stated, "All at the club are so proud of Shauna's comeback at these championships. She gave two outstanding performances, beating the elite champion Eve Woods last weekend and winning tonight in style on a unanimous decision against Christina McDonagh from Neilstown.

"Keith (Bobby) Galvin, coach, gave top-class instructions to Shauna in these championships.

"Robert Scanlon, Kenny Dillon, John Mackey and I all played their part in this fantastic win, a first women's senior elite title for the club.

"Shauna was beaten twice at this level in two finals by two Olympic champions, Katie Taylor and Kellie Harrington in 2016 and 2017.

"It was third time lucky for the Carrigeen Queen, no one was beating her this year.

"Congrats champ, never give up, never give in".
