Richly-deserved honour for stalwart of athletics scene in Tipperary

Niall O’Sullivan, who has won the Tipperary Sports Volunteer of the Year award

Niall O’Sullivan, Clonmel has won the Tipperary Sport Volunteer of the Year award.

Niall receives this award for his never-ending dedication, hard work and total commitment to sport in general but in particular his love and promotion of athletics.

He is no stranger to the people of Clonmel, county Tipperary and further afield.

He is one of the founding members of Clonmel Athletic Club, having served the club with great distinction in many guises for over 52 years.

He was just a teenager when he first served on the club committee in the early 70s.

He also served the club with distinction as an athlete and coach, and showed such fantastic innovation in developing almost all of the club-established races such as The Nationalist/Annerville 10k, the St Stephen’s Day 4 mile, the Boston Scientific Half Marathon and the inter-firm series of races, which he always said were to attract new club members, with many a champion coming from those races.

Niall continues to serve the club with great enthusiasm as a senior coach, mentor and advisor.

He has always made himself available to the athletes for advice on organising races, training and preparation for competition.

He is also an active member of the Tipperary Athletics County Board and has served on the board for 25 years.

Congratulations are also extended to Niall’s wife Peggy and his family, who have supported him throughout the years.

People who volunteer and commit to sport always have a loyal supportive team behind them.

Niall will receive his award from the Federation of Irish Sport and the National Network of 29 Local Sports Partnerships on Wednesday March 22 at the Volunteers in Sport luncheon awards ceremony at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Blanchardstown, Dublin.

The special guest at the ceremony will be Minister of State with responsibility for Sport and Physical Education, Thomas Byrne.

Niall will join his fellow recipients from all Sports Partnership areas in the country at an event that promises to be a real celebration of the dedication and commitment of each volunteer.
