The late Ger McCarthy
Tributes have been paid to one of Nenagh's best known community workers, Gerard "Ger" McCarthy, who has passed away.
Ger was a familar face at many events in the town's Scouts Hall, and an ever present there whenever Nenagh Choral Society was on stage.
He was also hugely involved in Nenagh Éire Óg.
Nenagh Choral Society paid tribute to Ger, saying: "It is with the deepest sadness that we have learned of Ger McCarthy’s passing.
"We extend our sympathies to Annette, Laura, Conor and Ger’s father Jimmy and his extended family and to Therese Bergin his cousin. We offer them our continued support and prayers at this saddest of times.
"Ger’s contribution to NCS over many years has been enormous as an actor, chairperson, committee member and Scouts’ Hall director. May Ger enjoy eternal happiness. RIP."
Nenagh Eire Óg said that they were "truly shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Ger McCarthy".
Ger had been a lifelong supporter of Nenagh Éire Óg, hurling in his younger years and then becoming involved as mentor and manager to many teams over the past number of years, they said.
"Ger was a great clubman and will be sadly missed by all," the club said.
The club offered their deepest sympathies to Ger's wife, Annette; daughter Laura; son Conor; father Jimmy; sisters, brother and the extended McCarthy and Moloney families
Tipperary Labour TD Alan Kelly said that Ger was "a gentleman whom I knew well and worked with on many issues down the years. The Scouts Hall wouldn’t be what it is today without the work of Ger. Condolences to all his family and all the clubs and organisations he was so involved in, particularly Nenagh Eire Óg and Nenagh Choral Society. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h'anam dílis."
Cllr Seamus Morris said that Nenagh had tragically lost one of its greatest community workers.
"He served many many clubs and organisations in the town with passion. By God, did he love Nenagh - if you saw him on a sideline you would know. My deepest condolences to his beautiful family and to his many friends," said Cllr Morris.
Ger of Hawthorns, Summerhill, Nenagh, passed away peacefully in the tender care of the staff of the ICU at Limerick University Hospital on March 25.
