Munster U16 B Shield Final
Tipperary 2-9
Clare 1-5
Having lost their first game in the Munster U16B Championship John Cahalan’s side were determined to make amends in Sunday’s Shield final.
The game was played in glorious sunshine on a dry surface which led to an excellent game of camogie. The Tipperary girls played some brilliant camogie in the first half and the backs, in particular, Robin O’Dwyer, Sarah Purtill, Ellie O’Connor, Orfhlaith Bergin, Dearbhla Casey and Caitlin O’Gorman fed the forwards with a constant supply of possession.
The movement and work rate of all six forwards Emma Costelloe, Ava Young, Clodagh Spain, Éabha Henry, Tara Quin and Jane Ryan paid dividends with Jane Ryan scoring a great goal and Emma Costello (0-1) Ava Young (0-1) and Tara Quinn (0-2) all scoring excellent points from play to leave the half time score, Tipp 1-4, Clare 0-2.
Clare had the upper hand for the early minutes of the second half and scored 1-1 in this period to cut the Tipperary lead to just two points but the halftime introduction of Sinéad O’Carroll and Éadaoin Bonnar would prove decisive for Tipperary.
Sinéad’s tenacious tackling and direct running style allied to the constant work rate of her midfield partner Clodagh Cahalan set up numerous attacks from which Éadaoin Bonnar scored three beautiful points from play.
Alayna Hogan also sprung from the bench and scored a crucial goal to put daylight between the teams.
In midfield Aoibhe Mathews and the tireless Clodagh Spain, and Jane Ryan finished off the scoring with a point each from a free and a 45.
Also a special mention to our fantastic goalie Niamh Boland who minded the net for this great victory. The final whistle was met with jubilant celebrations for this talented, and committed bunch of Tipperary girls and joint captains Jane Ryan and Margaret McGrath lifted the 2023 Munster shield after a well deserved victory and a great team effort.
Congratulations to Emma Costelloe named as player of the match.
