Auguste Rodin does the double for trainer Aidan O'Brien
The wind whistled around the Curragh and the roars went up when Tipperary trainer Aidan O’Brien won again with ‘Auguste Rodin’ taking the honours at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby today.
It was a 100th European Classic for the trainer and yet another Epsom-Irish Derby double, but it was hard earned for the three-year-old who won at 4-11.
A shock occured mid race when San Antonio tragically fractured his leg, taking jockey Wayne Lordan to the deck which in turn affected the race as the faller got in the way of Auguste Rodin among others.
The jockey was taken to hospital but Ryan Moore steered his mount clear and rode on for victory in difficult circumstances. The Epsom winner took the Dubai Duty Free-sponsored big Group 1 race for Moore who now has the honour of being a winner in the British and Irish Classics.
Adelaide River finished second in the race at 33/1 while 80/1 shot Covent Garden kept on to be third and all three were O'Brien trained in the €1.25m feature. Just outside the top three was Peking Opera who was also trained by the Tipperary maestro.
