Where did the good weather go?
Another week over and it’s hard to know whether we have skipped July altogether and just headed straight for Autumn. Paul Kenny is doing marathon work trying to navigate his beloved greens through the vagaries of the weather but at some stages during the week, he must have felt like Ulysses trying to navigate his ship through the clashing rocks. However he manages, he still has the course in fantastic condition, much to appreciation of our members.
Vale Oil Open Competition
In the Vale Oil Open Competition on 30 June, Jim Clary topped the field on 44, with Michael W O’Meara in 2nd on 42 and Michael John O’Donnell in 3rd on 38.
July Monthly Medal
The July Monthly Medal Competition at the weekend saw Herbert Buck take the medal position on 60, with our own Michael Junior O’Meara in strong contention on 61 a Richard Prendergast in 3rd on 64. Best gross was Colin Condon on 75.
Monday Mixed Scramble
Monday saw a large attendance at the ever popular Mixed Scramble, as the sun shone on the assembled masses. Tom Halpin, Trevor Gough and Gabrielle Schofield took the honours on the night, with a nett score of 35.3 points. Mark Dillon, Paddy Bambrick and Mary O’Reilly took 2nd on 35.3 with Jimmy Kelly, Eddie Daly and Marie Quirke in 3rd spot on 37.8.
Happy birthday to Mick
Tuesday was a very special day for young Mick Burke, who celebrated his 87th birthday. Mick is a legendary member of the Seniors. A true gentleman with a great attitude to life, he possesses great wit and intelligence and continues to play great golf, putting many a younger golfer to shame. He is an inspiration to us all.
LADIES GOLF
Our Ladies played their Sunday Tuesday 18 Hole Stroke Max on 2 and 4 July. Brid Delahunty won the competition on 66, with Ann O’Dea in 2nd on 70 and Bernie Phelan in 3rd on 70.

Bruen team bow out
Our Gents Bruen team headed to Blarney Golf Club on Saturday 8 July in the latest round of the Shield. Sadly it was not to be their day, although they pulled out all the stops and put on a fantastic display.
Ladies Challenge Cup
All eyes now turn to our Ladies Challenge Cup Team, who will meet Clonakilty Golf Club in the Munster East Finals on Saturday, July 22, with the game to be played in Fermoy Golf Club.
Nails will be shredded in anticipation, but we will be sending our Ladies out with great pride in their achievements to date.
Fixtures for the weekend
Next weekend (14, 15 and 16 July), we will be hosting our Ladies and Gents Captains’ Weekend and we expect a fantastic turnout in support of Terry O’Brien and Ann O’Dea, our two very popular Captains. This year we will also be including a Junior event with a Junior Cup kindly sponsored by Trevor Gough.
The weather is promising to be something of a mixed bag for the week but fingers crossed for a great weekend for the first big home competition of the Year.
