Sophie Becker, Kelly McGrory, Roisin Harrison and Sharlene Mawdsley celebrate after qualifying for the women's 4x400m relay final
When her country called, Sharlene Mawdsley answered and once more the Newport Athletic Club starter produced a fantastic time last night to secure a spot for the Irish women’s 4x400m team who reached the world final in Budapest.
Sophie Becker, Roisin Harrison, Kelly McGrory and Sharlene Mawdsley were the four that - against the odds - ran incredibly well to reach the final.
Up and coming star Rhasidat Adeleke wasn't part of the team last night which made the win even more thrilling if that was possible.
It was the Tipperary ace Mawdsley that produced the goods for Ireland as she ran the fastest of all final legs with a top class time of 50.01
The British team won the race with a time of 3:23.33 while Belgium and Italy completed the top three followed by Ireland Ireland. In the race the USA initially finished fourth but were disqualified after a mix up in the changeover zone.
The Irish 4x400m clocked a time of 3:26.18 which meant they finished fourth in their heat and so they advance with a good enough time to reach the final.
The 4x400m final is scheduled for later on tonight and is expected to start at 8.50pm (Irish time).
