The hostel (blue building) is in the centre of Cashel
There will be no International Protection Applicants arriving to Cashel this week or over the coming weeks because of new information that has come to light.
International Protection Applicants had been due to arrive in Cashel over the coming days however it was confirmed to Tipperary Live this evening that the Department has made the decision not to accommodate the IPAs in Cashel.
Speaking on the matter this evening, Councillor Declan Burgess said that he is "delighted that the Department has now withdrawn its decision to move refugees into the Hostel on John Street."
"It has now been clarified that full disclosure in respect of the previous use of the property had not been made at the time of the proposal.
"Following this clarification the Department has made the decision not to take up this offer of accommodation in Cashel Town Hostel as accommodation for IPAs, as to do so would impinge upon the provision of homeless accommodation services in County Tipperary," Cllr Burgess said.
A public information meeting to discuss International Protection Applicants relocation to Cashel was held last Sunday night and, after more than two hours of discussions, many locals felt shock and anger at the suddenness of the news and the numbers involved.
Protests had taken place this week at the hostel and also since the news broke last Thursday night.
The 74 International Protection Applicants were due to arrive this week into the town to stay at the Cashel Holiday Hostel but now that move will not go ahead.
