On Friday last the Clonmel High School CBS Under 15 team travelled to Waterpark RFC in Waterford city to play their opening Cleary Cup match. In cool but dry playing conditions, the High School produced a competent performance to win the match.

The High School imposed themselves quickly and raced into a 10-0 lead after four minutes with two quick tries from Natan Gucwa and Jerome Phelan.

Waterpark replied with two tries of their own to level the match at ten-all after 17 minutes.

The High School didn’t panic and worked their way back into the Waterpark 22. Successive carries by the High School pack gave Sean Delahunty the chance to crash over for our third try. Conall Morrisson added the conversion to extend the High School’s lead to 17-10.

In the closing stages of the first half, High School captain Mbekezeli Masuku showed good power and pace to score the High School’s fourth try to put them ahead 22-10 at half-time.

The second half ebbed and flowed until the last 10 minutes, when Waterpark scored a good try to reduce the High School’s lead to 22-15.

This sparked the High School into action and Masuku led by example, barging through the Waterpark defence to score his second and his team’s fifth try. Morrison kicked the conversion, extending our advantage to 29-15.

The final act fell to Jerome Phelan when he scored his second and his team’s sixth try in the corner on the stroke of full time. The High School won 34-15. Well done to the team and coaches.
