Tipperary History: Today marks anniversary of fatal shooting of James Devanney

Anniversary of Fatal Shooting

James Devanney, a member of the IRA from Pallas, Toomevara was fatally wounded on January 26, 1921 near O'Meara's Pub in Kilruane.

James was one of four IRA volunteers drinking in O’Meara's pub who were fired on by a party of Black and Tans and RIC as they attempted to escape from the pub.

James was wounded in the thigh as he crossed a field behind the pub and bled to death a short distance from the pub. The other IRA volunteers succeeded in escaping.

A roadside memorial, near the location of the fatal shooting of James, was erected on the road behind the pub in Kilruane a number of years ago.
