Much loved jockey Davy Russell worked in Tipperary for many years. He married Edelle O'Meara in 2016 at Coolbawn Quay, Lough Derg in the north of Tipperary..
Gold Cup and Grand National winning ex-jockey Davy Russell is now just 4/1 with BoyleSports to win Dancing with the Stars after once again impressing judges on Sunday night.
The dancer was the 50/1 outsider to win this year’s show after week three, but a surge of support has seen his odds in freefall ever since and he is now third favourite behind Blu Hydrangea and David Whelan.
Belfast based Blu Hydrangea once again blossomed on the dancefloor claiming the highest score of the season so far, 29. The drag star is now the 10/3 second favourite to lift the Glitterball when the curtain comes down on the show on St Patrick’s Day, with a standing ovation from the three judges capping off a sensational night.
While David Whelan failed to claim another 10 on Sunday night, the Wild Youth frontman scored a commendable 26 and the songster, who has been the long-term favourite to win this year’s show, is still rated as the most likely victor at odds of 13/8.
Sandwiched between the show’s shining stars on the leaderboard was The Six O’Clock Show’s Katja Mia who scored 27 with a captivating Charleston. The Dubliner is well fancied by many punters at odds of 9/2 alongside Laura Fox, but both have their work cut-out to to make their challenge against the likes of Davy Russell.
With fan favourite Eileen Dunne bowing out last Sunday, Rosanna Davison and Jason Smyth look set to be the duo dancing around elimination this week. Rosanna, who was nearly sent packing last weekend is 14/1 to launch a comeback and win this season, while Jason Smyth is now the outsider of the remaining septet at 25/1.
Brian O’Keeffe, spokesperson for BoyleSports, said: “Reminiscent of his Gold Cup win on Lord Windemere, Davy Russell is mounting a late challenge for the Glitterball trophy, but he’ll have to be at his very best to win the race against David Whelan and Blu Hydrangea who remain strong favourites.”
