Women for Election calls for more mná in Irish politics on International Women's Day

As the world celebrates International Women's Day (March 8th), Women for Election, a leading organisation for gender equality in politics, highlights the persistent gender imbalance in Irish politics. Currently there are no female TDs from Tipperary but there are many local councillors in the county. 
Ireland currently sits at 103rd in the world rankings for gender balance in national parliaments, with a meagre 23% of women in our Dáil and 25% in our local council chambers. This year Irish voters have a unique 1-in-5-year chance to reshape our democracy and vote to put more women in our local councils and in our national parliament.  
CEO of Women for Election, Brian Sheehan said “International Women's Day serves as a powerful reminder of the achievements of women throughout history, but it also highlights the work that remains. In Ireland we will continue to have an unfinished democracy until we have equal gender representation in our national and local politics.  
Our call for increased female representation in Irish politics is not just about equality; it's about building a stronger, more inclusive democracy. The upcoming local elections in June provide a unique opportunity for everyone to contribute to this positive change." 
Despite some progress in recent years, men continue to be overrepresented in Irish politics. The glaring gender gap undermines the diverse representation necessary for a thriving democracy. Women for Election believes that increased female participation in politics will bring different perspectives to decision making tables and lead to more effective policy and legislative outcomes, benefiting everyone.  
The upcoming local and general elections present a critical opportunity for change. Women for Election emphasises the importance of voters seizing this 1-in 5-year chance in our election cycle to make a conscious choice to have greater gender balance in our democracy. 
 
Women for Election invites the public, political parties, and the media to join the conversation and actively participate in creating a more equitable political landscape and in building a thriving democracy genuinely representative of the diversity of people, experiences and talents in Ireland.
