Unlock Tipperary’s Secrets with the Minogue legacy on Ireland’s Hidden Treasures

Bernard Minogue from Cashel features on the show.

Although most of us would associate King Cormac, St. Patrick and Brian Boru with the sublime Rock of Cashel, one family in particular holds the bragging rights to be the family with the longest running association with Tipperary's famous Rock.

This week, episode 2 of Ireland’s Hidden Treasures, features Bernard Minogue, head curator of the Cashel Folk Museum, who was born in Rock Cottage, the Rock of Cashel care-taker’s house. His father was the care-taker of the Rock and Bernard grew up playing amongst the ruins.

”I thought we owned the Rock of Cashel”, says Bernard, “as children it was our playground and my father held all the keys. My father, grandfather, granduncle, and great grandfather were the last sole caretakers of The Rock. And now today, my first cousin, Elaine Moriarty, is Chief Guide at The Rock, maintaining the unique family link to the castle from as far back as 1892.”

Bernard now runs the Cashel Folk Village which is situated at the edge of Cashel town and with a clear line of sight to the Rock and on this week’s Ireland’s Hidden Treasures Bernard takes us on a whirlwind tour of this fascinating historical gem which is a true hidden treasure.

Built by Bernard’s father-in-law, Martin O’Dwyer Bob (one of the foremost historians in County Tipperary) The Cashel Folk Village offers visitors a unique experience of a collection of small museums combined. In Ireland’s Hidden Treasures Bernard reveals the original Croke Memorial Cross and the surprising story behind it and he shares with viewers one of the only Blueshirt uniforms on display in Ireland today.

”Our country has a rich and varied history and here in Cashel I feel like I am standing on the shoulders of giants, people like my own father and my father-in-law who did so much to keep not just local history but Irish history alive and relevant to people today.”

Don't miss the journey into Ireland's heart and history with Ireland's Hidden Treasures. Tune in to RTÉ 1 on Sunday April 28th at 6.30pm for this extraordinary opportunity to go behind the scenes at Ireland’s Museums.
