Priest injured in knife attack served in Tipperary

The Army chaplin who was stabbed in Galway last week was well-known in Clonmel.
Fr Paul Murphy was stationed in Clonmel in the 90s and early 2000s and was a very popular figure as a result of his work in the community.

Fr Murphy, who is from Waterford, was a very active member of Clonmel Rotary Club, the Order of Malta and was the Clonmel CBS High School chaplin for a number of years while he was in Clonmel.
Karen Steenson, Principal of Clonmel High School said she was saddened to hear the news that Fr Murphy had been injured in the incident.
“My good wishes go out to his family. While he was chaplin in the High School he was very popular both among the staff and the students,” said the High School principal.

ROTARY CLUB
A member of Clonmel Rotary Club said everybody associated with the club was saddened to hear of the incident in Galway.
“He was a very active member of Clonmel Rotary Club while he was in the town. His whole nature was about doing what he could for people,” said a Clonmel Rotary Club spokesperson.
“Fr Murphy was a very popular member.
“He would always be make a major contribution with his time for fundraising projects that were launched by the club,” said the spokesperson.
One of the initiatives that Fr Murphy was associated with was the special ceremony at Easter he started.
Fr Murphy organised a candlelit Paschal procession from the Holy Year Cross down to the Easter Saturday ceremony at St Mary’s Church.
The event took place for a number of years and large crowds always attended the event.

RENMORE BARRACKS
A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court over the alleged incident during which members of the Defence Forces fired warning shots.
The attack happened last Thursday night at Renmore Barracks.
Fr Murphy studied at St John’s College in the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore and was ordained at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity in Waterford in 1996.
Apart from serving as a priest in Clonmel he also served as a priest in Dunhill and Fenor.
In 2013 he took up the chaplain’s role in Galway. He has been based at St Patrick’s Garrison Church, Renmore Barracks since then, with the 1st Infantry Battalion.
