Cashel town is now becoming ‘choked up’ with traffic issues galore

Traffic build up causes smog, lung issues and long delays for all.

The explosion of traffic across Cashel town across the past year has caused major issues for many in the town and surrounding areas.

The issue was raised  at the September meeting of the Tipperary/Cahir/Cashel Municipal District where Councillor Roger Kennedy raised the plight of the Brothers of Charity amongst others, as well as nearby residents, and those using nearby facilities.

The Motion was brought to the meeting that the Municipal District install a yellow box at the junction on Ladyswell Street and Francis Row in the interest of traffic safety and to facilitate an exit from Halla na Feile, Francis Row and the Brothers of Charity at times of heavy traffic on the R693.

Speaking on the matter Councillor Roger Kennedy said that  “I have noted the reply,” however the media present were not informed of the reply from the Council officials.

He pointed out that the buses which are coming out from the Brothers of Charity are often held up for varying periods of time depending on the volume of traffic and the time of day.

The business of the road mean that cars can’t get in or out until a break in the traffic so there are frequent tailbacks on the route.

“There is a hold up there with 6 or 8 buses trying to get out,” he said, highlighting the mounting traffic problems in the area. Cllr Kennedy said ”A yellow box would facilitate at particular times,” he said after careful planning  to find a solution.

“I’m asking that it can be designed and put out and I propose the motion,” Cllr Kennedy said and the motion was approved of by the other local Councillors.

The point was made that traffic is often backed up around the corner affecting the air quality and delays are now a common occurrence.

Cllr Burgess then informed the meeting that his sister lives very close to that point and said he “knows how heavy the traffic is” in that particular  area and in the town in general.

He said he was chairperson at Halla na Feile and is aware it is ”quite a busy junction so I hope the engineers can update us.”
The situation has got so difficult for residents from Palmers Hill now that they “go up the hill to go into the town by a different route” Burgess advised.

“If the town is ‘choked up’ then they can turn to the right,” Cllr Kennedy said. Commenting on the matter Councillor Liam Browne said that the possibility is there that the situation for road users could get even worse as there is ”strong likelihood a 60 bed unit” will be built on the hill which will be serving hospitals and increase the traffic down the hill.

“I agree, that box should be put in now" he said.
