The festive spirit was alive and well in Clonmel this year as the second annual Christmas Market at Kickham Plaza proved to be an even greater success than its inaugural year. Local residents, visitors, and stallholders alike praised the event for its vibrant atmosphere, increased variety, and seamless organisation, making it a standout celebration of the season.
A Growing Tradition
Building on the solid foundation of last year’s market, the 2024 edition saw significant enhancements that contributed to its success. This year’s market featured a wider range of vendors, offering everything from artisanal crafts and handmade gifts to gourmet food and seasonal treats. Many attendees noted that the expanded selection made the market an ideal destination for Christmas shopping, with unique, locally made products that couldn’t be found elsewhere.
“It’s wonderful to see so many talented artisans and businesses represented here,” said one shopper. “The quality and variety are fantastic.”
Entertainment and Atmosphere
The atmosphere was another big highlight of the event. The return of the hugely talented St. Peter and Paul’s Primary School band attracted a huge crowd with its stunning performance. What a delight to watch such talented young musicians perform with band maestro Yvonne Moran. The addition of the Clonmel Community Choir, Mrs. Claus storytelling and the St. Mary’s Church Choir brought an amazing festive energy to Kickham Plaza.
Thanks to the County Council, the plaza itself was adorned with new sparkling lights, creating an even better magical setting that delighted both children and adults.
Children especially enjoyed Santa taking time out to meet the wonderful children of Clonmel and hear how well-behaved they are before he visits them all individually on the 25th December.
Bringing Mrs. Claus with him was absolutely magical as they were mesmerised by her wonderful storytelling. These activities ensured that the market wasn’t just a shopping destination but a complete festive experience for all ages.
Community Engagement
One of the defining aspects of this year’s market was its strong community focus.
Teachers from all the Secondary Schools in Clonmel worked closely with local artisans, and food gurus to create an inclusive and welcoming event.
“This market is a testament to the strength and creativity of our community,” said one of the event organisers. “It’s about bringing people together and supporting one another during the festive season.”
Lessons from the First Year
Reflecting on the lessons learned from the first market, organisers made several key improvements. Increased signage and parking facilities made it easier for visitors to navigate the event. Additionally, the five secondary schools showcased more of the incredible musical talent of their students
The inclusion of more food vendors also addressed one of last year’s shortcomings. From traditional mulled apple juice to a hot food stall, the culinary offerings were a hit with attendees.
Record-Breaking Attendance
Attendance figures surpassed expectations, with hundreds of visitors flocking to Kickham Plaza over the market’s duration. Many stallholders reported record sales, and the positive feedback from attendees suggests that the market has firmly established itself as a highlight of Clonmel’s festive calendar.
“The turnout has been incredible,” said one vendor. “The community’s support has been overwhelming, and it’s clear that people are really embracing this event.”
With two successful years under its belt, the Christmas Market at Kickham Plaza is poised to become a cherished annual tradition. Organisers have already hinted at plans for next year, with ambitions to make the 2025 market even more spectacular.
As the lights dim on this year’s market, it’s clear that the event has brought joy and connection to the people of Clonmel, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of the town’s festive celebrations. Here’s to an even brighter future for this magical Christmas tradition.
