Tipperary native Diarmuid Cahill, who has been appointed the new manager of the Longford senior hurling squad
Tipperary native Diarmuid Cahill has been appointed the new manager of the Longford senior hurling squad and his first competitive fixture at the helm will be the National League Division 4 clash against Warwickshire at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park on Saturday January 25.
The son of former Tipperary hurler Dinny Cahill with his dad coaching the Antrim (two stints) and Laois senior hurling teams in the past, Diarmuid comes from the same club as current Longford star Cian Darcy - notably Kilruane McDonagh’s.
Cahill coached the Ballinamere team who reached the 2024 Offaly senior hurling championship final, losing narrowly against Kilcormac-Killoughey. He was also involved in the Kildare senior hurling management team in the recent past and brings considerable experience to take charge of Longford.
Diarmuid Cahill will be hoping to make his presence felt in charge of the county hurlers who reached the Lory Meagher Cup Final in 2024 under the guidance of former manager Adrian Moran.
Speaking on his appointment as the new Longford senior hurling boss, Cahill said:
“I played the most of my hurling career with Kilruane McDonaghs, winning titles throughout all adult levels. I moved to Kildare in 2015, winning a club senior title with Coill Dubh and a Christy Ring title with Kildare.
“While playing with Kildare I was part of Jim Sheridan’s management panel at U-21/U-20, helping the younger players to transition into senior hurling.
"In 2022, I took on the Westmeath Intermediate Camogie team and in 2023 they reached the All-Ireland semi-final, getting the county to new levels.
“In 2024 I took on the role of coach for Ballinamere senior hurlers who reached the Offaly senior final against a very strong Kilcormac-Killoughey side.
“I’ve followed the steps of my father Dinny Cahill where I’ve gained a lot from him and also David Herity (former Kilkenny keeper) when I was with Kildare in recent times.”
Longford GAA Management Committee were delighted to announce Cahill for the position.
"Diarmuid brings a wealth of experience to the role as both a player and manager. Longford GAA are excited by this appointment and we look forward to Diarmuid taking the county to new levels during his tenure." stated the new Longford GAA Chairperson Derek Fahy.
