As he is a past regional winner in the competition as was a runner up in 2018, it was no surprise to see him back at the top table again this year.
Richard is a firm believer of good sound soil nutrition which he builds on knowledge from regular soil sampling and then practicing an extended crop rotation including beans as an important break crop.
"I want to begin by congratulating Richard and his family on their remarkable achievement today and 5 years ago also and acknowledging the tremendous effort demonstrated by all four finalists in the Malting Barley Competition," said Dairygold Chairperson Pat Clancy.
"The exceptional standards that they continue to achieve are truly impressive. It is very important that all tillage growers get the opportunity to showcase their sustainability credentials and the contribution that they make to our business.
"As a company, tillage growers are a very important part of Dairygold’s business, and we remain committed to supporting and developing this part of our business into the future.”
The conference itself, the 10th of its kind hosted by Dairygold, focused on the ever-evolving Crop Establishment Techniques practiced on tillage farms today, where Andy Doyle, former Tillage Editor of the Farmer’s Journal, led the discussions throughout the day. Dermot Forristal of Teagasc presented on the cutting-edge advancements in farming technologies, the various systems that can be used on farm and how they vary.
Dermot also discussed the crop performance of wheat and barley, cultivation costs, soil carbon, the challenges of tillage farming.
He shared insights on the best approaches to address these challenges if they arise on farm.
Dermot was supported by Ciaran Collins, also from Teagasc, who complemented the discussion by highlighting the importance of adaptability in farming through a case study where he investigated the difference in crop establishment costs when changing from a current plough system to a non-inversion (125mm) cultivation.
Dermot concluded his presentation with the overall establishment costs along with other considerations that a tillage farmer may need to think about and adapt to their farm.
A highlight of the conference was the live panel of farmers discussing innovations on their farm and how these have transformed their farming practices. This debate extended to the general audience as each system was challenged for its positive and negative attributes.
