A GAA club in Tipperary has lodged an official complaint with the County Board following a recent underage county final, raising strong concerns about the standard of refereeing and the process by which the match official was appointed.
In a detailed letter sent to County Board officials, the club expressed "deep disappointment at aspects of the officiating", saying what should have been a "celebration of young talent and months of hard work was instead overshadowed by the handling of the game".
It is understood that the correspondence outlined several issues relating to the referee’s performance, including questions about "decision-making, consistency, and overall match management". The letter also queried the procedures used to appoint referees for major underage fixtures.
The club’s submission has called for a review of the referee appointment system and for greater transparency and accountability in how officials are selected for county finals.
It also urged the board to examine the broader issue of officiating standards at underage level.
While acknowledging that referees are bound to make mistakes, the club contends that the situation in this case went beyond "normal human error".
The letter stated that the "credibility of the fixture was damaged and that lessons need to be learned to protect the fairness and integrity of future competitions".
The correspondence concluded by requesting a "full investigation into both the conduct of the match official and the process that led to the appointment".
It is not known whether or not the County Board will undertake any action after receiving the correspondence. They have been contacted for comment.
