The clarification comes after rumours began circulating on social media in recent days, prompting concern among local residents. Gardaí say the allegations are “false and damaging” to the members serving in the Tipperary South Community Engagement Area, which includes Cahir.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána confirmed that no Garda members are currently suspended in connection with any incidents of criminal behaviour in the area.
“These allegations are false and damaging to the hard-working Gardaí serving the public in the Tipperary South Community Engagement Area,” the statement said.
“An Garda Síochána can confirm that there are currently no Gardaí suspended from duty in relation to any incidents of criminal behaviour in the Tipperary South Community Engagement Area, which includes Cahir Garda Station.”
The force also warned that the spread of misinformation, disinformation and fake news can have serious effects, diverting Garda resources and time from active investigations.
“At the most insidious level, misinformation and fake news are typically amplified by multiple accounts in order to spread concern within communities,” the statement added.
Gardaí are appealing to members of the public to verify any content they read or share online, particularly on social media or messaging apps.
