Denis Holland from the council’s environment section shared that progress on the new graveyard is gathering pace, with hopes high for submitting a planning application before the year is out.
After decades of anticipation, a long-discussed graveyard in a Tipperary village is finally poised to reach the planning application stage this year.
At the January meeting of the Tipperary-Cahir-Cashel Municipal District, Fine Gael councillor John Crosse requested an update from the council’s environment section regarding the Solohead graveyard project.

Denis Holland from the council’s environment section shared that progress on the new graveyard is gathering pace, with hopes high for submitting a planning application before the year is out.
“The case is well made in relation to the provision of a new Solohead graveyard, it’s going on for decades, not just years, but decades. Fortunately, we have identified a suitable and available site,” Mr Holland said.
"The planned site belonged to Tipperary Co-Op, which was amalgamated with Arrabawn Co-Op, and the amalgamation has delayed the process a little bit. There’s also a probability of land being used for other purposes in the immediate vicinity.
"I believe there is a proposal for a playground, as well as a burial ground, and it has to be looked at and accommodated,” he added.
Despite setbacks, Mr Holland confirmed that design work for the new burial ground is underway and the project continues to advance.
"We are progressing in relation to the burial ground site, and we expect that we’ll be preparing Part 8 documentation within the next few months, with a view to going to public consultation, before it comes back here to the members to decide on,” Mr Holland said.
