NEWS: TD brings up matter of people still waiting for pensions to Taoiseach in Dáil

Deputy Healy stressed that even a modest pension increase could ease the financial worries weighing on retirees.

Retired An Post and Eir workers in Tipperary have endured months of waiting for a long-promised pension boost that still has not arrived.

Local TD Seamus Healy brought up the problem in the Dáil, asking the Taoiseach to make sure the Minister for Public Expenditure signs off on the pension increases.

The Clonmel Deputy explained to Micheál Martin that each passing day of delay adds to the struggles these pensioners already face.

“Retired An Post and Eir workers, some in wheelchairs, protested outside the Dáil to have agreed increases in their pensions approved by the Government.

“The increases have been agreed by the company board, the scheme’s trustees, the Communications Workers’ Union and actuaries. Some of them were due from 1 June 2025, but they can’t be paid until they are approved by the Ministers for Communications and Public Expenditure and Reform.”

Deputy Healy stressed that even a modest pension increase could ease the financial worries weighing on retirees.

“The delay in payment of the increases is causing real hardship, Taoiseach. Pensioners are waiting months for the increase, while the cost of living and bills keep rising.

“Can I ask you when Minister Chambers will sign off? The Taoiseach promised to look into the matter personally and would review the issue.

“I will engage with the Minister for Public Expenditure on this and see where we are. There’s also the issue of CIE pensions that needs to be sorted out. My understanding is we’re close to getting that one resolved, and I’ll see where we are in respect of An Post and Eir.”
