Browne released the following statement online.
Councillor Liam Browne has reassured the community about the future of the Older Persons Residential Services at Our Lady’s Hospital in Cashel, aiming to ease local concerns.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) has said that Cashel’s Residential Older Persons’ Services are taking part in the HIQA re-registration process and does not expect any problems with renewing their licence. The service should be renewed in June for another three years.
Launched in response to the pandemic, the service was meant to be temporary, with plans to move residents to a new Community Nursing Unit in Cashel. Yet, progress has slowed, as the HSE has yet to choose a site or submit a planning application. The unit was originally set to begin planning in 2019 on the grounds of St. Patrick's Hospital.
Councillor Browne champions building the new Community Nursing Unit on the familiar grounds of Our Lady’s Campus, believing this efficient, community-focused plan would keep care rooted in a trusted setting.
Browne released the following statement online.
"Over recent months, I have been working continuously with senior members of the Oireachtas to ensure that vital services for older people in Cashel are both protected and expanded. I am pleased to report that the response I have now received provides the strongest reassurance yet for residents, families, and staff of Our Lady’s Hospital and St Patrick’s Hospital."
"The HSE has confirmed that Cashel’s Residential Older Persons’ Services are already fully engaged in the HIQA re‑registration process and do not anticipate any difficulties with renewing the licence."
"This statement removes any doubts that had arisen about the possibility of the HIQA licence expiring in June without renewal, and it gives welcome certainty to everyone who relies on these essential services."
"In addition, I welcome confirmation that the HSE remains committed to delivering a new 60‑bed Community Nursing Unit for Cashel and that the project is included in the current HSE Capital Plan. The HSE is now progressing through the site‑selection phase, including the acquisition of additional property."
"While I appreciate this progress, my own strong [reference is clear."
"I believe major investment must be directed into Our Lady’s Hospital itself, and that the new Community Nursing Unit should be located on the existing Our Lady’s Campus. This is the most efficient, sensible, and community‑centred option, ensuring continuity of care in a location already associated with decades of service and trust."
"Protecting and expanding care for our older people has always been one of my highest priorities. Their dignity, safety, and comfort must never be compromised."
"I will continue to work relentlessly to ensure that Cashel retains the essential services provided by Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s Hospital, and that our community receives the long‑term investment it deserves."
