Mabel
Our sweet young Mabel, a beautiful Llewelyn Setter mix, arrived to the rescue from the pound last week. While she was shy and even a little frightened by her new surroundings and the noise of her many kennel mates, we could see that our new addition was a gentle, sweet girl who would make a wonderful pet in the right home. Mabel adapted quickly to kennel life becoming fast friends with every other dog she meets.
A few days after she had settled in, Mabel was taken to our vets for a health check where it was revealed that she is well in pup, with at least 6 puppies appearing in her scan. We were saddened to discover that not alone was she abandoned at the pound unwanted, but with her babies due so soon too. At this point, we have no idea what breed or mix her puppies will be as we have no background information on Mabel.
Mabel, and her puppies when they arrive, will add to our ever increasing number of dogs at the rescue which currently stands at 60, 34 of them puppies. Mabel is far from the first dog to come into our care this year while expecting puppies, and she won't be the last. We’ve never seen as many unwanted puppies and abandoned pregnant mothers as we have this year – it’s a heart-breaking reminder of the importance of neutering your pet dogs, both male and female. Maybe if Mabel had been spayed her owner might not have decided they no longer wanted her when she inevitably fell pregnant.
Mabel is very well behaved with other dogs. She is still a bit shy when she meets new people for the first time but her confidence grows every day. Mabel walks nicely on the lead, at a calm pace without pulling or dragging. Mabel loves a gentle cuddle and fuss but doesn't jump or bark to get attention. We expect her puppies to be born in the next 7-10 days.
We would love to see Mabel find her forever home as soon as her puppies have weaned. She will be seeking a loving, secure home where she will get the attention and care such a lovely dog deserves. Mabel would adapt to life with any family with just a little patience.
