Manager Mary O’Shea has hailed the Mullinahone ladies football team after they reached their second All-Ireland final in less than twelve months last weekend.

Mulllinahone beat Derrygonnelly Harps from Fermanagh after extra time in Sunday’s semi-final of the currentaccount.ie All-Ireland Ladies Football Intermediate Club Championship at John Locke Park, Callan.

Last February, they were beaten by Dublin team St Jude’s in the All-Ireland Junior Club Championship final in Baltinglass.

“The team has grown so much since February”, says Mary O’Shea.

“They have grown in confidence and every one of the team is there for each other.”

She says that an appearance in Croke Park for the final was “the carrot” approaching the semi-final.

“All we wanted to do was to get over Derrygonnelly Harps.

“Now we can concentrate on Croke Park. It will be a great experience.

“Croke Park will bring another element to it and the pitch will be good and dry!”

Mullinahone are now focusing their attentions on final opponents Longford Slashers, who they will play at GAA headquarters at 3pm on Saturday week, December 10, and who Mary O’Shea says are a very tall and strong team.

She also reported that there were “a lot of sore bodies” in the camp after the semi-final.

“It was a very physical game”, she says.

“We dug it out in the end, but it could have gone either way.”

Mary’s daughters, Lorraine and Aoibhe, are vital components of the Mullinahone outfit, with Lorraine scoring 1-1 in the second half of extra time to secure their final berth.

“Lorraine missed a few frees in the first half, when it was difficult to play against the breeze, and Derrygonnelly missed a few frees as well.

“There was nothing safe until the full time whistle. It was a relief to hear it and we’re absolutely thrilled to have won.

“It’s surreal, it’s only sinking in this morning (Monday).

“It was a really good game, Derrygonnelly are a super team and were very tough opponents.”
