Mulinahone’s promotion from the junior to senior ranks of ladies football in such a short space of time has been “pretty wild”, according to captain Jennifer Brett.
Having contested the All-Ireland Junior Championship final last February, the club is now preparing for Saturday’s currentaccount.ie All-Ireland Intermediate Championship final against Longford Slashers at Croke Park (3pm).
“It’s amazing, even crazy to think we have reached two All-Ireland finals in the same year”, says Jennifer Brett.
“Every girl has put in the work and there has been 100 percent commitment and determination from every single player on the panel.
“Mary O’Shea (the manager) and (selectors) Eanna Ryan and Daire O’Brien have also been outstanding. They have stuck with us and are encouraging us.
“Every girl has put in 100 percent this year and that’s why we are where we are today.”
Jennifer agrees that it is an honour to lead the team into Saturday’s showpiece at GAA headquarters.
“They’re a great bunch of girls and it’s unbelievable to be going to Croke Park to play an All-Ireland final.”
She says that the semi-final against Derrygonnelly Harps in Callan, which went to extra time, was a huge test.
“We had to fight our way through and didn’t give up for one second. That shows how determined we are as a club.
“We keep each other strong. If one player is tired everybody else gets behind them and encourages them to keep going. The unit we have created is great.”
She says that the local community, including their families and friends, have got behind them and have been a great support all year.
“They have supported us in Mallow, Callan and Waterford, and to have that community spirit behind us is driving us forward. We cannot thank them all enough, including our sponsors.”
While it was great to reach the final, Jennifer says they cannot let it get to their heads in the build-up to the big game.
“We need to keep putting the work in to have a good go on Saturday.”
