GAA Club devastated after sudden death of 'one of a kind' player in Australia

A Tyrone GAA Club has described news of a beloved player's death abroad as "shattering".

Twenty four year old Matthew McGuigan reportedly died in Australia after falling sick over the weekend.

He was known as a talented player, having formerly captained Kildress Wolfe Tones.

According to Extra.ie, Matthew had just arrived in Sydney earlier last week with his girlfriend, Clodagh.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Kildress Wolfe Tones said: "We are absolutely devastated here in Kildress tonight with the sad news of Matty’s death. Our thoughts and prayers are with the McGuigan & Tracey families at this very difficult time.

"We all know the importance of looking out for and supporting each other and even more so in times like this. Therefore we have made the decision, with the support of the families, that our 5k a day will continue this week, in the hope that it will bring comfort to our community during this time.

"Kildress Wolfe Tones will have the doors of the Hub open and are encouraging everyone to call in for a cuppa. Rest in peace Matty, you truly were one of a kind!"

Another Tyrone GAA club, the Pomeroy Plunketts, also released a statement, which reads: "Pomeroy Plunketts GAA wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Kildress Wolfe Tones captain Matthew McGuigan.

"We are all shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. A young, talented man with such a bright future ahead of him.
This is another crushing blow to our neighbouring club and a massive loss the the GAA community.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Matthews family at this time. May he rest in peace."

Errigal Ciaran GAA stated: "As a club we are deeply saddened by the sudden death of Mattie McGuigan. We offer our deepest condolences to the McGuigan family, his friends and all those at Kildress Wolfe Tones.

"Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal."

A spokesperson stated, "A top-class player who lit up many pitches around Tyrone, he was a joy to watch.
