New political party Farmers Alliance approved by electoral registrar to stand candidates in forthcoming local elections

New Farmers Alliance political party registered to stand candidates

A new farmers political party is inviting potential candidates to get in touch ahead of this year's local elections.

The Farmers Alliance party announced last Friday that the Registrar of Political Parties, Art O'Leary had given notice of his intention to approve their application become a registered political party eligible to stand candidates.

The new party is co-founded by Liam McLaughlin, a Donegal sheep farmer, and Helen O Sullivan, a suckler farmer from West Cork, and began as a Facebook group founded by Mr McLaughlin to "give a collective voice to farmers, fishermen and rural communities who have been ignored and attacked for years by the governing elite".

In a statement the party said they aim to "provide a collective voice for the farmers of Ireland and push back on EU policies that threaten our industry and our nation's food and energy security", in addition to hardline policies on issues such as immigration, national sovereignty and freedom of speech.

The decision by the Registrar of Political Parties regarding the Farmers Alliance party will become effective after a 21-day appeal period, or the outcome of any such appeal.

For more information on the party and their policies, see their website farmersalliance.ie
