Motorists in Ireland are being warned to check their vehicles for signs of bug infestations.
According to StressFreeCarRental.com, bugs tend to look for a place to seek refuge when it's cold and rainy and cars are the "perfect place" for them to nest.
Bugs can quickly reproduce and multiply if they get into a vehicle, causing damage to the car and possibly leading to rashes and allergies to drivers and passengers.
CEO of StressFreeCarRental.com, John Charnock, said, "Motorists will be surprised to know how easy it is for bugs to invade their vehicle, so it is important to be aware of signs that indicate they are present.
"If a vehicle smells sweet and musty, it could signal that bed bugs have occupied and set up home as unwanted passengers.
"Critters like cockroaches and carpet beetles could leave behind unsightly holes in the upholstery and fabric of the car. We recommend that motorists clean their vehicles thoroughly every two weeks and ensure they are looking out for signs of bug infestations before they cause costly damage and health complications."
Bites
Bed bugs can get into a car by clinging onto clothes, furniture, and other items. Small, red, and itchy bites are a sign that bed bugs are present and you should thoroughly check your home and car.
Physical signs
The main indications of infestation are usually the physical signs which include eggs, black or red blood stains and droppings which appear as dark spots.
Rashes
If drivers suddenly find itchy, red bumps, or rashes on their body after being in the car, it could be a sign critters like bed bugs are present. Carpet beetles can also cause rashes and bumpy skin from their airborne fibres.
Holes in fabric
Some pests like carpet beetles and cockroaches feed on fabrics inside the interior. They tend to go for the seats and carpets so look out for unsightly holes in the upholstery and fabric of the car.
Messy vehicle
Although it’s not a sign, the most common cause of bug infestations to be aware of is the accumulation of food and clutter. Keep your car clean at all times to avoid unwanted critters nesting.
Allergies
Some bugs such as cockroaches and beetles can trigger allergies and asthma. If you find your allergies being triggered when you’re in the car, it could be an indication that bugs are present.
Musty smell
Motorists should beware of a sweet or musty odour as it could hint at a bed bug presence. Clear out the interior of your car and check for insects.
