Revealed: Plans lodged for Lough Derg Yacht Club mooring upgrade

Council to rule on planning application for RNLI docking system and mooring enhancements

Plans Lodged for Lough Derg Yacht Club Mooring Upgrade

Lough Derg Yacht Club (LDYC) has lodged a planning application with Tipperary County Council seeking approval for significant upgrades to the boat mooring facilities at the western shoreline of its North Jetty.

The Council is due to announce its decision on the application on September 14.

The proposed development includes the removal of the existing timber edge decking and the re-alignment of part of the shoreline.

In its place, a new two-metre-wide walkway would be constructed on a line of stone-filled galvanised steel mesh gabions, finished with sustainable hardwood jetty edging and a bitmac onshore path.

A central feature of the plan is a “Versa-Dock” floating docking system to facilitate the safe mooring and rapid launching of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution rescue rigid inflatable boat (RIB), ensuring quicker response times in emergencies.

Other proposed works include:

The installation of low bollard safety lighting along the jetty.

Upgraded underground services, providing new water and electrical connections from existing LDYC systems.

A domestic effluent pump-out station for sailing and motor cruisers, linked into the Club’s existing foul sewer network.

Landscaping improvements with native tree planting to offer wind protection and screening from the lake.

If granted, the development will enhance both the Club’s boating facilities and the region’s emergency response capacity on Lough Derg, while incorporating environmental and sustainability measures.
