It was a memorable weekend on the equestrian front for two Tipperary athletes, as Tom Wachman and Padraig McCarthy both recorded significant international victories.

In showjumping, 19-year-old Tom Wachman from Gooldscross, Cashel beat off a strong field to win the 1m50 three-star Grand Prix at Valencia in Spain.

Just four of the 43 starters managed to jump clear in the opening round with Wachman, riding the nine-year-old stallion Tabasco de Toxandria Z, among the quartet who went forward to the second round jump-off.

Wachman went on to produce the only double clear of the competition to secure his first ever three-star Grand Prix win. Second place went to Victor Bettendorf (LUX) ahead of Alexa Ferrer (FRA) in third.

Meanwhile, in eventing, Padraig McCarthy, originally from Grangemockler and now based in Devon, played a key role in helping the Irish Eventing team secure a magnificent win in the final round of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup series at Boekelo in The Netherlands. The Irish quartet of Aoife Clark, Susie Berry, Padraig McCarthy and Austin O’Connor were in sixth place after Friday’s Dressage phase.

Ireland had moved into the lead following Saturday’s Cross Country and held just over one fence advantage over the USA heading into Sunday’s final Show Jumping phase. The Irish showed great composure to extend their lead after Show Jumping, including a perfect clear round from Padraig McCarthy, and finished on a final score of 102.6, leaving them 13.5 penalties clear of USA, while Germany finished third on 131.9.

In the individual competition in Boekelo, Susie Berry and the Vincent Cousins-bred Clever Trick (ISH) finished best of the Irish after completing on their Dressage score of 32.0.

Padraig McCarthy took 10th place with Pomp N Circumstance while Aoife Clark finished 12th with Sportfield Freelance (ISPA). Global Quest (ISH), bred by John Kelleher, finished fourth overall with Tim Price (NZL).
