'I will continue to do my best for the people I represent' - Tipperary Cllr Mark Fitzgerald
Cllr Mark Fitzgerald was Co-opted to Tipperary County Council in January 2019 and was re-elected in the local elections on May 19.
Since being re-elected to Tipperary County Council he is serving on a number of committees including the Tipperary Education Training Board(TETB), South East Regional Health Forum, Tipperary Joint Policing Committee, as well as The Roads and Infrastructure SPC and The Environment and Climate Action SPC with Tipperary County Council.
Cllr Fitzgerald was elected as Mayor/Cathaoirleach of the Carrick-On-Suir district in 2021. In that time he oversaw the application and part 8 process involved in Carrick-On-Suir’s RRDF application, which came to fruition last month when Carrick-On-Suir received €14.4 million in funding.
“I really enjoyed my year as Cathaoirleach of the District, it was an amazing experience and felt I became a more rounded public representative because of it”.
When asked about his hopes and plans for 2023, Cllr Fitzgerald stated "I will continue to do my best for the people I represent especially now in the trying times we are living in. I would hope to see inflation levelling out a bit as it is putting a lot of pressure on all aspects of society”.
Cllr Fitzgerald whose family own the Thatch Pub in Cloneen went on to say: “The last few years have proved very difficult for business, first with Covid and now with the increasing cost of living as well as raising energy costs. With this in mind, it is very important that all Tipperary businesses, that are eligible, should apply for The Temporary Business Energy Support Scheme (TBESS) to help offset the rising energy costs”.
The Cllr who is from the Parish of Drangan and Cloneen also went on to say “I look forward to the roads budget for 2023 and hope the increase will offset the raising cost of materials so that the schedule of road works for 2023 won’t be affected but we might even be able to have enough additional funding to get an extra road or two on the program. We also need major funding for drainage works in the area."
He added: “We had an adverse weather event last October which caused a lot of damage not only to the roads in the area but several houses were flooded. We need to get the funding to carry out drainage projects on numerous roads in the county. It’s a basic rule of thumb, if you can keep the water off the roads they will last longer - but not at the cost of flooding a residence or business."
Cllr Mark Fitzgerald finished by saying “He is really enjoying his time serving the people of his area and of Tipperary. It is an honour to be able to represent the people of your area and I will continue to do this to the best of my abilities. I would like to wish all in the premier county a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous 2023."
