Former captain Brian Fox leads Tipperary out at Semple Stadium a few years back. The footballers could do with big support today too.
Tipperary hurling supporters heading to FBD Semple Stadium today for the big clash between Tipperary and Limerick are asked to show their true colours and to make their trip that bit earlier and get to Thurles to shout for the the county's footballers against Down (throw-in 1.45 pm).
Tipperary are up against the Ulster side in their second Tailteann Cup game and really need a win to guarantee their progress in the competition. Having lost their opening encounter to Meath in Navan last Saturday, David Power’s side would appreciate the backing of a big home support against the Mournemen.
It will be Down’s second visit to Thurles in just a couple of months as they were here also for the Division 3 League opener in late January when they won by 2-11 to 1-11.
A loud vocal support for the home side today might help to overcome that deficit and assist in securing a vital victory for the Premier team and management, who despite a disappointing year to date have no less been making huge efforts.
The footballers’ third and final round robin game will be against Waterford at a neutral venue to be announced early this week. Those final round robin games will go ahead on the June Bank Holiday Weekend, most likely on the Saturday for the Tipperary v Waterford clash. Waterford have already lost heavily to Down and Meath.
The top teams in each of the four Tailteann Cup groups go directly through to the quarter-finals. The second and third placed teams advance to preliminary quarter-finals. But there is one caveat in there in that ‘only three’ of the third placed teams go through, the omission is to allow New York to join in at that stage of the competition.
Defeat against Down today could place Tipperary in a very precarious position ahead of their final round robin game.
