Tipperary and Kilkenny clashed in another Allianz NHL Final this afternoon in Nowlan Park.
Out-hurled, out-muscled, out-thought - Tipperary fall heavily to their fiercest rivals
Kilkenny 2-23
Tipperary 2-17
Tipperary were scalped by Kilkenny this afternoon in Nowlan Park in a very chastening Allianz NHL Final which saw The Cats destroy the Premier men in the second half.
The wheels came off the Tipperary challenge almost immediately after resumption of the second half when Walter Walsh raced through and blasted a goal after just 24 seconds. From then on there was sulphur in the Nowlan Park air and Kilkenny had the ammunition to blast Tipp out of it.
This was an eagerly awaited final and while Tipperary folks traveling to Nowlan Park for the game, knew full well the enormity of the task facing their side, there was, nonethless, great expectancy and optimism, despite the inclement weather around the time of departure from The Premier County.
However, upon arrival at The Marble City, the sun was shining and the conditions much improved. Nowlan Park was in immaculate condition and this made for a very high octane clash of the keenest rivals in the game at the present time.
Tipp were 1-10 to 0-11 in front at the break with the decisive score coming from a Jason Forde goal in the 24th minute after a John McGrath pass. TJ Reid was the standout player of the half as he contributed all bar two of Kilkenny's scores while Jason Forde was also in unerring form for Tipp with 1-6 to his name.
Tipperary needed to kick on after the Forde goal but it was Kilkenny who make headway and the interval lead of two points was a modest one, considering Tipp had played wind assisted in the first half.
The Walsh goal started the rout, and by the time sub Luke Scanlan found the Tipp net for the second time in the 28th minute, the game was well over as a contest. Kilkenny piled on points, mostly from TJ Reid, and though Jason Forde had a goal from a Tipp free in the 30th minute, it served only as a consolation.
A chastening defeat this for Tipp, they must now re-group before the championship for the second year in succession having failed to land the Allianz prize.
