Tipperary bowed out of the championship series for 2018 when a resurgent Clare came to Semple Stadium this afternoon and sneaked  a late victory in the dying moments of a pulsating game of hurling.

This was a must win game for Tipperary and even at that, the Premier men were depending on other results to keep them in the championship shake-up. So, the scene was set for a real humdinger of a clash in Semple Stadium with the pitch in perfect order and the Tipp lads having gotten a real lift from the minors victory a few moments beforehand in the curtain raiser.

A fine first half of play saw Tipp take a 1-10 to 0-9 lead into the interval having produced the best first half of the campaign so far. They were 0-4 to 0-1 ahead when Billy McCarthy shot a fine 13th minute goal having gotten onto a breaking ball off Patrick Bonner Maher. The score was a real shot in the arm for Tipp and they were hurling with real aggression and drive having upped the ante considerably from the previous outings.

Clare had six of their first half tally from placed balls from Peter Duggan, but they had also missed a number of chances with eight wides - three of them from Tony Kelly from distance, materialising. Tipp needed to tighten up on this for the second half.

The second half was an absorbing contest and the game turned in the blink of en eye when a Jake Morris effort came off the upright in the 30th minute and from the resultant clearance, Clare goalled at the other end through substitute Ian Galvin.

Tipperary were hanging on the ropes and it looked as though a draw might well be the case again. But, Clare scored 1-5 to Tipperary's 0-2 in the last ten minutes to claim the victory and dump Tipp out of the championship.
