Cahir's Shane Crosse leads the race for the apprentice title heading into the last weekend
The Irish apprentice championship is set to go right down to the wire and Shane Crosse, the 17-year-old Cahir native, is in the box seat on 25 winners - three clear of his nearest pursuer, Killian Leonard.
Crosse guided Tuamhain to victory in the Callan Handicap at Gowran Park on Tuesday for his main employer Joseph O'Brien.
Shane Crosse rides Happen to victory at Leopardstown for Aidan O'Brien.
He was also among the winners at Dundalk on Friday night thanks to the James Lambe-trained Reverberation who scored at 7-2, while a landmark success arrived at Leopardstown on Saturday as he rode his first winner for the legendary Aidan O'Brien as Happen took the Tote Irish EBF Fillies Maiden at odds of 5-1.
The curtain comes down on the Irish Flat season at Naas on Sunday and it is looking increasingly likely that Crosse will be crowned champion apprentice.
Fethard trainer Joe Murphy's charges are finishing the season in excellent fettle, and after a narrow defeat at Gowran Park a week previously, the filly Centrifolia went one better in good style to land the Thomastown Handicap at the same track on Tuesday afternoon.
Settled off the pace, the daughter of Dark Angel made good ground on the inner in the straight and responded strongly to Gary Carroll's urgings inside the last to see off Royal Navy Warship by a length-and-three-quarters.
