Our U14 team were invited to take part in the Chill Insurance Kilmacud Crokes All Ireland U14 7s Ladies Football tournament as a result of winning the County U14A Feile earlier this year.
We had an early start on Sat morning for arrival in Kilmacud at 9am with our 1st game at 10am v Adamstown, Wexford which we lost after a tough battle on a scoreline of 7-3 to 6-2.
The girls put in a terrific performance in the 2nd game v Donaghmoyne, Monaghan winning on a scoreline of 9-2 to 1-3.
Our 3rd game was against Southern Gaels, Kerry who proved to be much stronger with them prevailing on a scoreline of 8-6 to 0-2. The result of this game was overshadowed by injuries to both Chloe Whelan and Kate Delaney which thankfully didn’t turn out to be too serious despite a brief trip to A&E for Chloe.
Despite only having 8 players, the girls regrouped in Game 4 and prevailed after a dominant performance over Ballinascreen, Derry on a scoreline of 5-2 to 1-2.
Up next was our Plate Quarterfinal v Carrigduff, Down with the girls displaying great skill and stamina to win on a scoreline of 9-2 to 6-2. Our Plate Semifinal v Eire Og, Cork was a tense affair with the girls staging a great comeback from 4 points down at half time to win on a scoreline of 7-1 to 4-5 with the added bonus of team captain Kate Delaney making her return from injury to bolster up the attack.
The final was an epic battle v Derrynoose, Armagh with girls battling from start to finish showing huge heart and a desire to win despite near exhaustion after a tough schedule of games. The game ebbed and flowed with both teams taking the lead throughout the game and despite the concession of a late penalty the girls prevailed on a scoreline of 5-2 to 3-7 to joyous celebrations from the large band of supporters who travelled to support the girls on the day.
The girls arrived home to a wonderful reception at the Town Hall led by pipers Joe Barry and Ger Roche followed by food in Murphys Bar.
Thanks to Garda Larry Stapleton and An Garda Siochana, Templemore for the escort on arrival to Templemore. Thanks to Joe and Ger for leading the girls in and to Martin Bourke, Bourke’s Costcutter for providing the girls with refreshments. Thanks to Mike Ryan for his wonderful photographs which captured many epic moments that will live long in the memory. Thanks to Rachel Johnston for her assistance with First Aid. Thanks to Paula Ryan for her assistance with team preparation in the dressing room. Thanks to Larry Stapleton and Damian Johnston for all their assistance with Logistics and a special thanks to Maria Stapleton for accompanying Chloe on her brief trip to A&E.
Thanks to all the parents and supporters who travelled to Dublin to support this wonderful bunch of players despite an early start on Sat morning.
