Cllr Jim Ryan has proposed a Notice of Motion to the Tipperary County Council seeking a raised pedestrian crossing to be installed on the Lognafulla Road in Thurles.
Cllr Ryan believed this will be of great benefit to the town, allowing for cars to slow down as they come down the hill, while also giving pedestrians a chance to cross the road safely.

The motion was discussed at the recent meeting of the Thurles Municipal District of the Tipperary County Council on Monday, October 20.
In his Notice of Motion, Cllr Ryan said: “I am calling on this District Council to install a raised pedestrian crossing along the Lognafulla Road in Thurles between the Water Tower and the Borroway / Bohernamona Road junction. It would act as a way to slow down cars coming down the hill and also as a means of allowing pedestrians to safely cross an extremely busy and dangerous road.”
In response, the Tipperary County Council said: “This junction was identified by the MD as requiring safety measures following the submission of planning applications in the area which would substantially increase pedestrian and traffic volumes.
“To address this the MD set aside 2025 Development Levy monies (€30,000 Bohernamona Road Widening) and we are currently engaging with landowners in the area to progress an overall solution.
“Subject to agreements and a Section 38, further Development Levies will be allocated in 2026 to deliver traffic and pedestrian safety measures in the area.”
Taking to social media following the approval of the plan, Cllr Ryan expressed his delight with the decision, stating many locals had contacted him regarding the danger that exists at present in the area.

He said: “At this week’s District Council Meeting, I tabled the motion looking for traffic calming measures and a raised pedestrian crossing point here at the Lognafulla Road, due to the huge level of traffic that comes down, particularly from the rugby club down the hill towards Thurles, and along Mitchel Street.
“I’m delighted to say that the County Council agreed with my concerns, and have said that they are going to be putting money aside to carry out traffic calming measures within the area, particularly along Bohernamona Road, and the junction here with Londis, and along this very busy road here in Lognafulla, down by the water tower.
“So this hopefully will include the widening of the Bohernamona Road, safety works at the junction here, and also hopefully a pedestrian crossing of some sort here along the Lognafulla Road.
“Obviously this is going to require substantial funding. The Council has put aside a certain element of money, but more money will be required to carry out these very necessary works along this very busy road.
“So what they’ve told me is that they’re hoping to get more money in 2026. Hopefully when the money has been allocated, plans can then be drawn up, and if approved, hopefully contractors can then be appointed. So hopefully this will happen soon.
“I will keep the pressure on them, because this is a very busy area, a lot of elderly people, a lot of people use the shop here, and a lot of people have been on to me, expressing their concerns of the danger of crossing this very busy road here in Thurles,” Cllr Ryan concluded.
