RIP: Tributes paid to late Tipperary man who was 'an absolute gentleman'

The death has occurred of John Maher, of 46 Collins Park, Thurles.

John passed away on March 24 in the wonderful care of the Community Hospital of the Assumption,Thurles.

He is predeceaded by his parents Michael and Alice, his brother Paddy and sister Dina.

John will be sadly missed by his devoted wife Margaret and his loving family, daughters Caroline, Sharon, Majella, Geraldine and Lorraine, his sons Michael and John Paul, his adored grandchildren Jason, Shane, Colm, Rachel, Sophie, Adam, Dean and Lauren, his sons-in-law Patrick, Noel, Seán and Lilian, his daughter-in-law Amy, his sisters Phyllis and Mary, nieces, nephews extended family, his former colleagues in Thurles UDC, neighbours and friends.

May he rest in peace.

John lay in repose on Thursday evening, March 26, in Kennedy's Funeral Home, Thurles.

He arrived in the Church of St Joseph and St Brigid, Bohernanave at 8:45pm, for Funeral Mass on Friday morning, March 27, at 11am, followed by private cremation.

The family has asked for no flowers, and donations if desired to Suir Haven Cancer Support.

Tributes have been paid to John online, with one person saying: “Our heartfelt sympathy to Margaret and Family on the sad passing of John. He was a true gent and always so good to look after our fathers grave and flowers in St Patricks. May he have the best seat up there in heaven.”

Another said: “Sincere Sympathy to all of the Maher family on the sad passing of John it was always such a pleasure to chat with him he always had time and could he trace the history of Thurles and it's people. Rest in Peace John a true legend.”

Another paid tribute, saying: “Sincere condolences to all of the family on the sad loss of John. We will forever be grateful to John for the wonderful, dignified caretaking he did of the family graves. An absolute gentleman. God rest you John.”
