There is a sense of profound shock being felt in Tipperary Town following the death of a pensioner who was assaulted last Friday and has since passed away.

Moving tributes have been paid to Teddy Murnane of St Michael’s Avenue, Tipperary Town, a man in his eighties, who passed away at Limerick University Hospital.

He was described as a quiet man and a lovely neighbour who was a passionate supporter of the Tipperary hurling team.
For years Teddy, who worked as a bus driver for most of his life, was entrusted with the job of driving the Tipperary hurling team to Croke Park on All-Ireland days, and he was a very popular figure among the Tipperary players of the time.

Neighbour Stevie O’Donnell (pictured above) said Teddy Murnane was a quiet man and a great neighbour to everybody in the community.

“He was a very quiet man, never put in or out with anybody. People are in real shock after what happened. He was a lovely, lovely neighbour,” said Stevie O’Donnell.

Stevie said the deceased worked for years as a bus driver with Matt Kavanagh Coaches and was honoured to drive the Tipperary senior hurlers to Dublin for the big matches.

“I spoke to Nicky English this morning, and he was devastated to hear Teddy had passed away. Teddy, whenever you met him, was always wearing something with the Tipperary colours. The Tipperary flags were always flying from his car; he was just a Tipperary hurling fanatic. He was a great man to read the game as well,” said Stevie O’Donnell.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the St Michael's Avenue area between 7pm and 10pm on Friday, September 12, to come forward.
