A major €3.5 million project to remediate the historic landfill at Carrownreddy in Tipperary Town is set to get underway, with Priority Construction Ltd appointed to carry out the works.
The project, which is fully funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment under the Historic Landfills Grant Programme, is expected to take approximately eight months to complete.
The landfill, which operated from the 1940s until around 1990, accepted both household and commercial waste and has long been identified as requiring environmental remediation.

Welcoming the project, Sharon Scully, Senior Executive Officer with Tipperary County Council’s Environment and Climate Action Directorate, said the funding marks an important step forward.
She said the initiative highlights the ongoing commitment of the Council and elected members to addressing legacy landfill sites and ensuring their proper closure in line with environmental standards.
The works are being carried out in accordance with a Certificate of Authorisation issued by the Environmental Protection Agency in 2019, which requires the Council to undertake remediation measures to protect the environment.

Planned works will include site clearance, demolition of existing structures, and the reshaping of the landfill. A key element of the project will be the installation of an engineered capping system designed to seal the site.
This system will prevent rainwater from entering the waste mass, reduce the risk of harmful leachate affecting groundwater, and control landfill gas emissions. It will also ensure that surface water is safely managed.
Additional works will include drainage systems, access tracks, fencing, and landscaping of the site.
The project represents a significant investment in environmental protection in Tipperary Town and will help ensure the long-term safety and stability of the former landfill.
