"Next weekend is looking really promising," says forecaster Alan O'Reilly.

He added: "It could be the lift so many people and businesses need. Lawnmowers will be roaring and garden centre car parks will be jammed."

Met Éireann's five-day forecast is below:

Monday: Monday will be cool with a mix of sunshine and blustery showers, some heavy with hail possible in the north and northwest. Breezy too with fresh to strong and gusty northwest winds, reaching near gale force for a time in the morning in the northwest. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees.

Overview: Continuing cold and showery early in the week. Milder and drier later on.

Monday night: Showers will die off and become confined to the west and north with clear spells developing elsewhere. Lowest temperatures of 4 to 7 degrees with northwest winds gradually moderating.

Tuesday: Continuing cool with sunny spells and scattered showers tracking southeastwards. Highest temperatures 9 to 12 degrees with moderate to fresh northwest winds.
Tuesday night: Cold and mainly dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of between 1 and 5 degrees, with light to moderate northerly winds.

Wednesday: Dry and cloudy for much of the day, however rain will spread southeastwards through the evening. Highest temperatures of 9 to 13 degrees with moderate to fresh northerly winds.

Wednesday night: Continuing mostly cloudy overnight, with patches of light rain and drizzle becoming isolated. Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees with light to moderate northwest breezes.

Thursday: A mostly cloudy day with patchy light rain at times. The best of any brighter spells developing in the southeast. Highest temperatures of 10 to 15 degrees, with light to moderate northwest winds.

Further Outlook: Current indications suggest drier, more settled weather will develop through the end of the week and into next weekend
