Native American to lead Famine 1848 Walk

Ballingarry Famine 1848 Walk

Crowds at the Ballingarry Famine 1848 Walk last year

The annual Famine Walk for  2018 will take place on 28 July at 3pm. Choctaw native, Waylon Gary White Deer, will lead this year's Famine 1848 Walk on Saturday, 28 July at 3pm.

The Walk commemorates the Famine and the 1848 Rising and remembers all those who suffered, died and emigrated.

The Walk will recall the extraordinary act of kindness by the dispossessed Choctaws to the starving Irish during the Great Famine.

The starting point for the Walk is the Young Ireland and National Flag monument in the village of The Commons. The Walk covers 1½ miles and concludes at Famine Warhouse 1848, the state national heritage site. Light refreshments will be served.

On Sunday, 29 July, in the afternoon there will be free guided tours of the site. All are welcome.
