LIVE: Tipperary 'walk and cycleway' expansion planning decision imminent

A decision from Tipperary County Council on a proposed expansion to the Loch Dhoire Bhile Loop is expected later this week.

The applicant, Bord na Móna Energy Ltd., submitted their proposal in late February.

It proposes a "recreational shared cycle and walkway to connect into the existing Loch Dhoire Bhile Loop".

This would include  the repurposing of 602 meters of existing former rail bed, 2,859 meters along existing bog headlands/former high fields, and 721 meters along pre-existing machine access routes.

Bord na Móna have also applied for the construction of car and/or bicycle parking facilities, agricultural access crossings, and new signage along the walking route.

The existing loop follows bog roadways and green tracks along streams and lakeshore through a redeveloped area of old Bord na Mona peatland which has become a wildlife sanctuary, particularly for birds.

It's currently just under 2.5km and takes just over an hour to walk.

A decision from the council is expected by Thursday, April 24.
