Fianna Fáil Education Spokesperson and TD for North Tipperary & Northwest Kilkenny, Ryan O’Meara, has confirmed that three schools in Tipperary have been chosen to take part in the Physical Activity in Teaching and Learning Pilot Programme.
Kyle Park National School, Newport Convent Primary School and Scoil Naomh Cualán are among forty-one schools nationwide selected for the initiative. Each participating school will receive up to €10,000 in funding to support the integration of physical activity into everyday teaching and learning. This is in addition to the physical activity already experienced by pupils during physical education lessons.
Six post-primary and thirty-five primary schools have received grant payments in recent days.

Speaking about the announcement, Deputy O’Meara said:
“Exercise is so vital for everyone, particularly for young people in schools. Increased physical activity leads to improved motor skills, better cognitive function and the development of positive lifelong habits.
“This pilot programme presents a great opportunity for schools to be innovative and creative in how they integrate movement and activity into teaching and learning.

“These schools now have the chance to explore new methods of learning and experience the many benefits that come with them.
“Being part of this pilot gives parents, teachers and most importantly students a voice in shaping how the scheme evolves, especially if it is to be rolled out nationwide. It allows them to play an active role in shaping the future of education in Ireland.
“Exercise is such an important habit to instil in our youth. Encouraging a love of movement and an understanding of its benefits from an early age makes it far more likely that young people will maintain an active lifestyle as they grow older, bringing lasting benefits for their health and wellbeing.”
