The Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) is asking the people of Newport, Tipperary to attend their upcoming clinic on Sunday 8 February in Newport Community Centre, as hospital demand surges and national stocks of certain blood groups fell to to just over two days' supply on occasions in 2026.
Following a difficult Christmas period and a significant spike in hospital requirements this January, the IBTS is seeing a spike in demand for blood.
In December alone, hospitals required over 1,700 units of O Negative blood—accounting for 17.2% of all blood issued—far exceeding expected projections.

"The demand shows no signs of abating," a spokesperson for the IBTS stated. "The first week of the new year saw a major surge in orders from Irish hospitals. With blood having a shelf life of just 35 days, there is a constant demand for blood to ensure patients get the care they need."
The IBTS is calling on both regular donors and those who haven't donated in some time to book an appointment:
