A new two-part documentary aired on RTÉ last night titled ‘Turbulence – The Story of Ryanair’, offering viewers an in-depth look at the origins of one of Ireland’s most well-known and sometimes controversial airlines.
Those tuning in may have been surprised to learn that Tipperary plays a central role in the airline’s origin story.
Both of Ryanair’s founders have strong ties to the county. Tony Ryan hailed from Limerick Junction, while Christy Ryan was from Kilsheelan in Tipperary, placing the roots of the airline firmly in the Premier County.

The documentary explains that the name for the airline was born at a meeting which took place in Tipperary at Kilboy House, which was the home of co-founder Tony Ryan.
Several names were considered at this meeting (which was attended by Tony Ryan, Christy Ryan and Tony’s two sons) including 'Shamrock Air' and even 'Trans-Tipperary Express', before the now-famous name 'Ryanair' was suggested by one of Tony’s sons.
The documentary highlights how, while Ryanair would grow into an international aviation giant, its beginnings were deeply rooted in Tipperary, giving the county a unique place in the history of Irish aviation.
